Japan as Seen by Foreign People - Making Natural and Appropriate Small Talk

Making small talk is not only a great way to break the ice with foreign tourists you meet for the first time, but it can help to improve your English skills and overall confidence speaking English, too.

In my experiences in Japan, Japanese people are usually very eager to make small talk, but sometimes find it a little difficult to hold natural, and in some cases, appropriate conversations.

This is because small talk can be broad, so it can be difficult to know what to talk about. Also, many Japanese people find it difficult to decide what is and what isn’t appropriate because of cultural differences.

Then there’s a lack of confidence in English ability, which often results in the speaker unintentionally asking questions or making comments that may sound a little direct and
awkward to native English speakers.

For example, when I attended a cultural exchange event in Ebisu, many Japanese participants found it difficult to start conversations naturally, like with a salutation or natural lead-in phrase, and instead started by asking me direct or inappropriate questions like “What’s your name?”, “So, you’re from the U.K. Do you like Brexit?” And others tried to continue conversations by asking, “How old are you?”, “Are you married?”, “Do you have a Japanese girlfriend?” much to my surprise!

“What’s your name?”
“So, you’re from the U.K. Do you like Brexit?”
Brexit(イギリスのEU離脱)には賛成ですか?」

“How old are you?”
“Are you married?”

So, how can we make sure our small talk is both natural and appropriate? Well, it’s important to understand what topics to avoid. As a rule, it’s best not to talk about heavy or personal topics, such as:

Politics
政治
・ Relationship Status
Appearance/Age
Religion
宗教

Now that we know what to avoid, let’s take a look at some ways that we can make natural small talk.

Starting the conversation

Of course, simple greetings are a great start, and a nice lead-in could be a question about a shared experience in your current location (city, country, event). Some examples include:

“Is this your first time in Japan/Tokyo?”
“Are you enjoying the summer festival (so far)?”

Taking about the weather is another great conversation starter. You can use expressions like:

“It’s hot/cold today, isn’t it?”
“What a beautiful day!”

Talking about the trip

Asking tourists questions about their trip is great for continuing conversations, and it shows that you are genuinely interested in their journey.

Good example topics and questions include:

Opinions about Japan ? e.g. “How do you like Japan/Tokyo?”
Sightseeing ? e.g. “Have you been to Asakusa?”
Food ? e.g. “Have you tried monjayaki? It’s a local specialty.”

Talking about common interests

Try to find common interests. You can do that by asking simple “yes” or “no” questions like, “Do you like…?” / “Are you interested in..?” For example:

シンプルなYes/No疑問文、 “Do you like…?”や “Are you interested in…?“で知ることができます。

“Do you like sports?”

Once you find something in common, keep talking about it, or make some recommendations based on the common interest. Tourists will really appreciate it.

Now that you know what is natural and appropriate to talk about, the next step is to have confidence to give it a try! Your English will improve as a result, and it will go a long way towards making tourists feel welcomed during their stay in Japan.
